I do not have a green thumb period! Everything I try to grow only gets to a certain point, then dies. I tried to grow a vegetable garden….. Negative. Tried for about three years, I finally just stopped trying. I know you’re not suppose to quit, but hey, gardening just wasn’t looking bright in my future.
On a pretty Saturday morning, I got the idea to try and plant some Marigolds in the flower pots my kids had made for me a couple years ago. My mom always told me they repelled mosquitoes. We live in South Ga, and have a lot of those so, what the heck. The kids would have a blast planting in the flower pots, plus they’re use to my failure in gardening so they wouldn’t be disappointed in the outcome if nothing grew.
A couple days after we planted our 5 flower pots, we had sprouts everywhere. I mean they were all over the place. I told my husband jokingly, “that’s probably as far as we will get.” I ended up looking up on google “how long until Marigolds bloom?” Google told me 7-8 weeks. Cool beans. Well my little sprouts grew and grew, then they reached a stopping point. Yup here it is, here is the point where they stop growing. We came up to the 8 week mark…. nothing.
Then, around 9 weeks, little bulbs started to form. I got all excited. But, still… nothing. They stayed like that. I wanted to just dump them out and be done with it. My heart was sad because I kept getting my hopes up and then what, nothing. But something told me not to. Something told me to just wait and be patient.
Finally 11 weeks, our first bloom. I was so excited!!!! For someone who can’t keep any plant alive, I had my first bloom! No, it didn’t happen as fast as it was “suppose” to. It happened when it was suppose to. We get so impatient wanting to move faster, then we are ready to throw it away, normally just before we bloom. We quit.
Don’t throw out your pot, just because you’re not where you want to be yet, or it’s not happening fast enough. You are growing and moving at your rate. Be patient, keep watering and sowing, and you will reap!
